The Reflex Systems

The body is divided into 10 zones, numbered 1-5 on each side of the body. The zones run from the tips of the toes to the head and back down to the fingertips, each one linking all parts of the body. Each zone one starts at the thumb and big toe, with the two zone fives starting at the little finger and the fifth toe on each side of the body. Reflexologists see the body reflected onto the hands or the feet, so spend time working on each zone. Double organs divide up in the obvious way, the right kidney, for example, on the right foot or hand. Other organs appear where you might expect: the heart on the left, the liver on the right. Some organs are represented twice, with a small reflex point within a larger area. This is because some organs have specific reflex points, which stimulate the organ more than working on the whole organ area. Draw four imaginary lines on your feet, starting between the toes and slicing down through the heels. Zone one is the strip containing your big toe, zone two the second toe and so on. The little toe is in zone five. When you read about the 'inside' and 'outside' of the foot, imagine your footprint. The inside is the edge from the big toe to the heel, the outside from the little toe to the heel. The same applies to the hands: the inside is nearest the thumb, the outside nearest the little finger.

About the Author

Has anyone experienced this (except me)?

It seems that whenever I get into a fight and I'm focused on my opponent, my opponent seems to slow down. I can literally watch every movement that they make as if the fight was completely fake (like a slow, gentle sparring match). I guess the best way to put it would be that it's like watching someone do Tai Chi. Not only that, people have commented that I have the "speed of a Blackbelt" even though I haven't taken Martial Arts lessons a day in my life. I only choose to fight when it is necessary to survive. Not only that, when I throw a punch, it always seems to be aimed at a "kill zone" (It's good that I can stop myself, huh? Speaking of which, how is it possible that I can STOP my body's emergency reflexes?). I know that adrenaline affects speed and strength, but can it also affect visual perception as well? I've been curious about this phenomena for a pretty long time. Please tell we what is going on.
At least I know that I'm not crazy!!! Thanks for the sparring tip.

A lot of the answers are talking about reaction time. While this is part of the equation adrenaline is another. Adrenaline literally supercharges your system. You can move faster and stronger, you develop tunnel vision so you're less distracted by whatever it is you AREN'T focusing on and much more.

One of the neatest changes brought on be adrenaline is that it actually makes you think faster. Add this to taking in more details and heighten reflexes and you get your opponent's slow down.

As for each punch going to a kill zone... I'm going to take that with a grain of salt. Being able to pull a punch is something you need to learn unless you want to just kayoe everyone who manages to surprise you. Of course, our instincts can be suppressed, we wouldn't be anything but animals if we couldn't. A lot of martial arts training is learning to control the "flight fight or freeze" responses that come naturally. In addition to controlling them, we work to reprogram our natural fight instincts with martial movements, be they strikes, throws, locks, whatever.

If you want to train then find the best teacher in your area and start lessons. You'll learn a lot with a great teacher and this is more important than the style. You'll have access to far better sparring opponents (you should never spar your friends unless you're all training) who will be able to push you to higher skill levels.

Good Luck.
