In diabetes, the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Diabetes can lead to problems such as heart disease, stroke, vision loss, kidney disease, and nerve damage.
Studies show that people at high risk for diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of the disease by losing 5 to 7 percent of their weight, if they are overweight—that’s 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person. Treatment for type 1 diabetes includes taking insulin shots or using an insulin pump, making healthy food choices, getting regular physical activity, taking aspirin daily (for many people), and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Diabetes without proper treatments can cause many complications. You cannot leave this up to your doctor alone – it needs you to take responsibility for your own treatment, and that starts with understanding what you are dealing with.
