I have heard of weighted blankets for autism & people with sensory issues any other ideas similar? Thanks?
I cant afford a weighted blanket - I would have to order from overseas. The concept seems perfect for someone I know who uses a similar idea sitting under piles of cusions, laying under a mattress etc all for the feeling of weight. Does anyone know of any other concepts similar to this - perhaps portable ones which could be used during the day?
Thanks
I would recommend that you find an old blanket (maybe from a thrift store if you don't have one that you can use lying around) or sheet or large pieces of fabric, and basically sew beans or dry rice into them. What I mean is that ideally, you want to sew two pieces of some kind of fabric together, with beans or rice between the layers. You will have to make additional lines of stitches throughout it to keep the contents from shifting too much. You won't be able to wash it. :[ You could make another cover for it that you can wash, though. It doesn't have to be very big, I don't believe. It doesn't need to have a lot of excess like normal blankets do.
You can make a weighted vest in the same way, basically, but you can wash that, if you make pockets in the vest that a bag of beans or rice can go into. You'll want to keep the pockets closed with whatever the person is less intrigued by: velcro, zippers, buttons, snaps...
Another option is, if the person goes to school, to ask the school if you can borrow one, which they will often do. The person probably also gets services (I would hope) from a community source. The one in my state offers some forms of in-home care, support groups, etc. If the person gets services like this, which is probable, they can often lend weighted vests and things, too. At least you can use it for a while and decide if it's worth trying to make one or saving up to buy one. Alsoooo... Those community services sometimes have funds you can use to buy things like that, but you have to fill out a form and have it approved.
Sometimes, they can get the same benefits from tight clothes. It 100% depends on the kids. I've been around kids who wear wet suits under their regular clothes. :]
I would go through www.abilitations.com and get ideas. They're expensive like all providers of special needs products, but maybe you'll see some affordable things, or at least get your wheels spinning.
After all that, don't be surprised if what the person is already using is what he/she will like the best...
