What You Should Know About Asthma
Asthma is a respiratory disease characterized by constriction of the bronchial passages and swelling of their mucous lining. This results to obstruction of breathing. This is mainly caused due to allergy, particularly dust, animal fur, cotton dust, moulds, pollen grains, epoxy resins, animal fur and various metals and woods.
The occurrence of Asthma is worldwide. It is estimated that in any give society, 1 in 20 suffers from asthma. Individuals who suffer asthma always feel a tightness in the chest, coughing, wheezing and difficulty to breath. The attack of asthma is usually terrifying if not treated. The Treatment of asthma can be quite expensive.
How to Prevent Asthmatic attack
Prevention is the better than cure for asthma suffers. Particles that irritate the lungs can cause asthmatic attack. Asthmatic sufferers should try to avoid contact with the following:
Smoke: People who suffer from asthma should try and avoid smoke no matter how meager. They should also avoid smoking.
Dust Particles: Avoid staying in a dusty environment. Dust particles can provoke attack of asthma.
Stress: Too much stress can cause asthmatic attack.
Food: some food can cause asthmatic attack to certain individual. Avoid taking food that will elicit asthma attacks. Foods that are deeply fried should be avoided.
Exercise: Tedious exercise like foot ball and lung distance run should be equally avoid. They can illicit attack.
Infection: Infections like cold should be avoided. Cold can lead to asthmatic attack. Treatment for asthma is not usually effective when infection is present.

What are respiratory therapists? how can they help an asthma patient?
Respiratory therapist work in the cardiopulmonary department. Meaning that they deal with the heart and lungs. They can do EKG'S. sleep studies, PFT's, stress tests, and methylcholine challenge (helps to determine if you have asthma or not). They sometimes can intubate a person in respiratory distress and then do ventilator management. They suction mucus out of people who have a hard time coughing it up. They do chest compressions on a person in cardiac arrest...... they bag a person in respiratory distress..... do trach care...... are there for delivers--- vag or section..... they tend to newborns in distress and help suction the amniotic fluid when the baby is first born..... they attend all codes.... give COPDer's and asthmatics treatments..... Their job is endless and there is so many things that they can do.
For asthmatics.... they can give them a test to determine if they have asthma or not. From there they Dr. will read the test and diagnose that patient with asthma if the test results say so. From there, the Dr. orders preventative asthmatic meds along with rescue inhalers/meds. When the patient comes through ER or is admitted in the hospital, the RT gives him/her a neb treatment if needed.
